ABOUT MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINING
What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, highly specialized massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system - the network responsible for fluid regulation, immune function, and waste removal throughout your body.
Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses very light, rhythmic strokes and precise sequencing to encourage lymph fluid to move more freely through the body. The result is reduced swelling and inflammation, faster tissue healing, and a noticeable sense of lightness and calm.
Maxwell Merila is certified in MLD and brings the same personalized, results-focused approach that defines every session at Merila Massage.

Who Benefits Most from MLD?
MLD is a versatile therapy with a wide range of applications. Here are some of the most common reasons clients seek it out:
Lymphedema Management
For those diagnosed with lymphedema - chronic limb swelling often caused by cancer treatment or other lymph node damage.
Sports and Injury Recovery
Helps reduce post-workout swelling and inflammation, speeding up recovery for active individuals and athletes.
Post-Surgery Recovery Support
Especially after cosmetic procedures (liposuction, BBL, tummy tuck, mastectomy). MLD is often recommended by surgeons to reduce swelling and fibrosis.
Chronic Condition Management
Those managing fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, or autoimmune conditions may find relief through regular sessions.
Wellness and Detox
Anyone seeking a deeper detox experience, reduced puffiness, and improved overall wellbeing - no medical condition required.
Please note: MLD is generally very safe, but certain conditions are contraindicated, including active infection, congestive heart failure, blood clots, and some cancers. If you have a medical condition, please consult your physician before booking, and feel free to reach out to Max directly with any questions at Max@MerilaMassage.com.
Stress and Nervous System
The deeply calming nature of MLD activates the parasympathetic system, making it ideal for those dealing with chronic stress or sleep issues.
YOUR SESSION
What to Expect at Your MLD Session
MLD feels different from a traditional massage: lighter, slower, and deeply calming. Here's how your session will flow:
Personalized Consultation
Your session begins with a conversation about your health history, goals, and any areas of concern. If you're recovering from surgery, please let Max know the procedure and timeline so the session can be tailored appropriately.
Gentle, Rhythmic Technique
MLD uses very light, feather-soft strokes - far lighter than a Swedish massage. The pressure is intentional and precise, following the pathways of your lymphatic system. You'll remain comfortably draped throughout.
Full-Body or Targeted Focus
Sessions can address the full body for general wellness and detox, or be concentrated on specific areas (such as the legs, abdomen, or face) depending on your needs.
Post-Session Guidance
Drink plenty of water after your session to support lymphatic flow. Max will share aftercare recommendations and suggest a session frequency based on your individual goals.
FAQs About Lymphatic Draining
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage and how is it different from regular massage?
1
MLD is a specialized technique that uses very gentle, rhythmic strokes to stimulate the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin. Unlike deep tissue or Swedish massage, the pressure is extremely light. The goal isn't to work muscles, but to encourage lymph fluid to move through the body more efficiently. It feels more like a calming body treatment than a traditional massage.
Is MLD right for me if I'm recovering from surgery?
2
Yes - MLD is widely used after procedures to reduce post-operative swelling, prevent fibrosis (scar tissue hardening), and speed up your overall recovery. Most surgeons recommend starting within 1–2 weeks post-op, depending on your procedure. Always check with your surgeon before booking.
Will it hurt? How much pressure is used?
3
MLD is one of the gentlest forms of bodywork available. The pressure is intentionally very light - most clients find it deeply relaxing. There should be no discomfort during a session. If you're post-surgery and have sensitive areas, Max will work carefully and communicate with you throughout.
Are there any conditions where MLD is not recommended?
4
Yes. MLD is contraindicated in certain situations, including:
Active infection or fever
Congestive heart failure
Active blood clots (deep vein thrombosis)
Active, untreated cancer in the affected region
Acute inflammation
If you have any medical conditions or concerns, please consult your physician before booking.
How many sessions will I need?
5
It depends on your goals:
Post-surgical recovery: Typically 3–6 sessions in the first few weeks, tapering as swelling reduces
Lymphedema management: Ongoing regular sessions, often weekly or bi-weekly
General wellness / detox: One session is a great starting point; monthly maintenance is popular
Chronic conditions: A series of 4–8 sessions is usually recommended to assess response
We will discuss a recommended plan during your first session.
Booking your Manual Lymphatic Draining Session
MLD sessions are available in three lengths. For post-surgical clients or first-time MLD recipients, a 60 or 90-minute session is recommended.
